Wild
Bird Premium Mix
Birds adapted for eating seed and similar
items such as pips and nuts. The best known examples are finches
and sparrows, recognisable by their heavy conical bills suitable
for crushing hard food. Some of these birds, like House Sparrows
and Chaffinches, will also eat insects or feed them to their young.
A variety of seed is available for catering for these species in
the garden.
Our Wild Bird Premium Mix provides quickly
usable energy and is very suitable for tubular feeders. Our two
seed mixtures contain those seeds commonly used as foods for birds,
for example sunflower seed and peanuts, perhaps combined with cereals
like oats and wheat, and sometimes less well known ingredients
such as the following:
Whole oats can be fed to birds, but
pinhead oatmeal is far more important. It can be bought on its
own, the husks from the grain having been removed and the seed
finely chopped, or it may be obtained as part of a seed mixture,
combined with such ingredients as sunflower seed, peanuts, wheat
or maize.
Some birds can eat whole wheat, for
example doves and sparrows, but its main use in feeding birds is
as an ingredient in seed mixtures, often combined with oats and
maize.
